Big Faith, Big Impact: Help Us Power the Journey in Lotumbe

Lotumbe is a remote village in the Democratic Republic of Congo with no electricity, running water, or roads. It is accessible only by canoe or by walking for miles through the dense equatorial rainforest. The Illinois Valley Cluster is sponsoring a 5K Walk/Run/Bike on August 15 to raise funds for a beekeeping initiative. The Bee Collective of Lotumbe urgently needs a motor to more efficiently transport people, equipment, and products by dugout canoe.

When the Illinois Valley Cluster of Disciples churches first considered raising $3,955 to purchase an engine for the community’s dugout canoe, the goal seemed daunting. But as William Carey, often called the Father of Modern Missions, famously said, “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”

For the people of Lotumbe, a motor on their canoe isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifeline. It transforms hours of grueling paddling against strong river currents into swift, safe transportation, making it possible to expand beekeeping projects, deliver goods, and strengthen connections between communities. What seems like a large financial goal becomes a life-changing reality when many people work together.
