Pray for the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday, June 4, 2017

Lectionary Selection: John 20:19-23 or John 7:37-39

Prayers for the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

“Breathe on me, Breadth of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love the way you love, and do what you would do”.  (Edwin Hatch, 1878)

Lord, thank you for pouring out your spirit on all who receive it, all over this world. The Holy Spirit is a gift from you sent to help, comfort and guide your church in the ministry of Jesus Christ. We thank you for the freedom that accompanies your Spirit, and for the Spirit of Christ that dwells within us. Holy Spirit, continue to empower our mission of witness and service to all people, to truly exhibit the fruits of the Spirit. And may the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of us. In the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit…Amen!

Mission Stewardship Moment from the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

Making Room for the Holy Spirit

This week’s prayer for DR Congo occurs during this season of Pentecost, and just as the Community of Disciples of Christ in Congo (CDCC) is preparing for their general assembly, scheduled to take place August 4-8, 2017.

The CDCC planning committee is actively listening to the Holy Spirit in deciding a theme, and most importantly choosing a chaplain, or “aumonier” in French. In fact, two chaplains are chosen (one woman and one man) to be the spiritual guides in all aspects of the general assembly. Their responsibilities are to lead prayers, teach, preach and provide pastoral care to the delegates in attendance. They are empowered to halt the proceedings to pray, admonish or share a word if they discern it is necessary.

In essence, these chaplains share in the work and character of the Holy Spirit, for they are called upon to convict, support and intercede for the church. By appointing these chaplains to be sensitive to the Spirit, the CDCC is making room for the Holy Spirit’s active participation during the general assembly. This desire is a testament s to the dynamism of the Holy Spirit as a disruptive force for Good.

Please pray in solidarity with Rev. Clement Mputu, Vice President of CDCC and chair of the planning committee, as he leads the committee in participation with the Holy Spirit to seek God’s will for the general assembly.
