A Handbook for Today’s Disciples’ 5th edition ready

A new edition of a Disciples classic is available to help longtime Disciples and newcomers to Disciples congregations gain a better understanding of our history, thought, worship, mission, and structure.

Noted Disciples historian D. Duane Cummins wrote A Handbook for Today’s Disciples in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1980, with regular updates over the years. Like its predecessors, the new fifth update uses scripture and Disciples documents to illustrate the denomination’s history and changes through 2017, including an examination of the Disciples’ changing ethnic diversity in the context of contemporary North America.

A Handbook for Today’s Disciples has been reflectively revised in the light of recent Christian thought on the fundamental principles that shape Disciples understanding of sacraments, scriptures, God, Christ, Holy Spirit, prayer, worship, mission, and moral-ethical issues,” Cummins says. “The Handbook is designed as a tool to inspire and enlighten the efforts of pastor and member alike to vigorously defend the vitality and continued relevance of the historic Disciples principles of liberty and toleration, and the promotion of a profound ecumenical understanding about Christianity.”
