Sending Teams in Missions

We wanted to take some time and update everyone on what we have been doing and where we are going next. In May of 2012 we became “Long Term Volunteers” for Disciples Homeland Missions (DHM). That means that we can be sent out by Josh Baird the Director after any disaster to serve on a long term basis as leaders for volunteer groups that want to help at any DHM designated disaster station, ie Joplin, MO. In the next few weeks we will be leaving for Toms River, NJ to work with the Brethren Disaster Ministries to learn and work in the hurricane Sandy devastation. In early September we will leave for Clarksdale, MS to work in a Long Term Station for DHM, re-doing work on a Disciples church that added a 15,000 sq. ft. new building addition, much of the work was not done right and they were left with a big mess and a building that they can’t use. With the help of DHM, other funding and volunteers we will have them in their new sanctuary by Easter, April 5, 2015 as they requested for Pastor Class baptisms.

Prior to partnering with DHM many of you know that we worked in Mexico in conjunction with Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries, we still have a close relationship with them. Due to the drug cartels many volunteer groups were afraid to come and work on the border. We had very little volunteer help by late 2011 and early 2012. With the current situation and minors crossing the border alone that has created a new problem for SWGSM to deal with so they are focusing more on this situation than the building “casita’s” for the poor in Matamoros, Mexico. We were sad to leave as we had worked there for over 16 years.

In February of 2012 an F-5 tornado hit Harrisburg, IL in southern part of the state. Since we had driven to Texas in January we decided to come home by way of Harrisburg to see if we could help in any way. We quickly met some local businessmen who had put together a team called “Project Storm” to rebuild their city. When Mike was ask what he could do he said “I am a General Contractor, they said “OK, great you are the Construction Manager” as none of them had any construction knowledge. So we spent from May of 2012 until January of 2013 working in Harrisburg. From May until November we lived there full time with just a few trips home to Bloomington. Because the sleeping quarters were in a church and designed for volunteers to stay for a week or few days it became apparent that we needed a more long term plan so we invested in a used RV that we lived in. Project Storm helped with our gas and the costs of our campground where we parked the trailer but we had to pay for our food and personal expenses. Harrisburg churches were very kind to feed the volunteers for evening meals and for that we were grateful.

We have recently worked with a few volunteers in Washington, IL after their tornado last November of 2013. In that time though Mikes continues to work as a contractor doing jobs to make money to pay our bills, as we are on a fixed income. We also save so we can go back out on the mission field to do what we love and that is helping others. We feel strongly about our call to mission work and are guided by the Holy Spirit in all that we do. We are the only Long Term Volunteers from the IL/WI Region at this time. We pray that your church will consider supporting our ministry by praying or bringing a mission team to help us. Please consider what your congregation can do to help “The King’s

Carpenters” “take care of the least of His”

Blessings to all, Mike and Julie Robinson
